What Brides Forget to Budget for in Destination Weddings

disclaimer: Occasionally we do share a paid affiliate link, receive a free product in exchange for our review, or accept paid advertising for a post. We also have thriving planner and venue partnership programs, which we love to promote here.  Please know that we only share things, people, and places we absolutely believe in and recommend.

You’ve tallied the venue, catering, travel, and decor—but even the most organized brides miss a few sneaky expenses when planning a destination wedding. While celebrating in a beautiful place is absolutely worth it, understanding the lesser-known costs ahead of time can help you feel in control.

Here are a few often-overlooked expenses that add up:

1. Vendor Travel Fees

If you’re flying in your photographer, hair and makeup artist, or planner, be prepared to cover not just flights, but also hotel stays, meals, and transportation. Even local vendors may charge extra if your venue is remote.

2. Luggage + Shipping

Your checked bags—and possibly even your dress—may cost extra to transport. Some couples ship decor or welcome bags ahead of time, which can be pricey, especially internationally.

3. Welcome Events and Extras

It’s easy to get carried away with welcome parties, farewell brunches, and group excursions. These are lovely additions—but they require added budget for venues, food, drinks, and staffing.

4. Tips + Service Fees

In many countries, tipping customs are different than what you’re used to. You might also encounter unexpected venue service charges or local taxes.

5. Legal Fees + Paperwork

Getting legally married abroad often requires translated documents, notarizations, and registration fees. Many couples choose to marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony abroad to avoid the red tape.

6. Last-Minute Guest Support

Think: extra shuttles, hotel adjustments, or unexpected guest meals. A few minor add-ons can quietly stretch your budget if you’re not prepared.

Planning ahead is key, and having an experienced planner makes all the difference. The team at Chancey Charm helps our couples anticipate the unexpected, build smart budgets, and avoid costly surprises—so you can focus on the fun part.
